Adopting a cat

It is always exciting when suddenly you realise you have room in your life for perhaps a kitten or cat, but it is also a big decision. You need to consider how having a cat will alter your life.

Either call or send an email to Sandy to express your interest. I will need your address and either a mobile or telephone number. Please give me as much information as possible about yourselves. For instance, do you live alone? Do you have children - what are their ages? Do you have any other pets? Do you work from home or elsewhere and what hours do you work? Are you looking for a kitten or cat? Would you consider an older cat?

All this information will enable me to help you to find a suitable companion. I may also make suggestions to you about your choice, but my only aim in life is to find a caring loving home for the kittens/cats in my care. Please note I do like to carry out home visits this not only enables me to ensure it is a safe environment, but again it gives you an opportunity to ask for any advice.

 HAPPY EVER AFTER STORIES

Recently we have been so fortunate in finding the right owners for cats who have arrived traumatised by events that had affected them deeply.  Rosie was brought to us because her human mum had died and Rosie was obviously deeply affected by this.  On her arrival she immediately took shelter in an igloo bed and stayed there most of the time.  If we attempted to stroke her we would get slapped with a very heavy paw!  She never did bite or scratch, but would dare anyone to put their hands into her bed.  When food was delivered, she would pretend she was not hungry.  However, Rosie is a big girl and did not decrease in size so we knew she was eating especially when occasionally there was an empty dish.

When we cleaned her pen whoever was doing it would spend time talking to Rosie and it reached a stage where she would allow us to stroke her.  Then at supper time after feeding all our guests I would spend time talking and playing with Rosie.  Gradually we got her to trust us and the major breakthrough was when Rosie would be sitting waiting on the shelf and she would meow or give her funny little "Rosie Chirp".  What eventually helped Rosie turn the corner was the arrival of two kittens, Ike and Marley.  They would race around and stare into her pen.  Initially she would wear the look of "I am not interested", but eventually their antics amused her and shook her out of her apathy.  Her eyes regained a sparkle, she became more vocal and the best bit of all she now has a new Mum and Dad.   The pictures shown of Rosie are of her on her first day in her new home.  By the look on her face she is saying "At last I belong and have a Mum and Dad who will love me."

 HAPPY EVER AFTER STORIES

Who remembers our fabulous Pete??  With us for a long time as we tried to control his bouts of cystitis.  On arrival he was a "spikey" character" but we understood why.  He had been trapped by a farmer, pulled from the trap by his back legs and thrown into our pen! So, naturally his aim in life was to keep all humans on alert mode! When cleaning his pen, he would love to ambush the cleaner, by jumping out of his igloo bed with claws/teeth ready for action.  Vet visits were always eventful!  Wearing gauntlets Carolyn would enter the sleeping area. Dawn ensuring the door remained closed.  Hearing movement a cross face with slitty eyes would appear (teeth/claws at the ready).  The bed was quickly scoped up and put in the carrier we couldn't risk "a wall of death" incident in the pen.

During the first few months there was a lot of interest in our handsome boy and we homed him.  Within a short period of time, he was back because he kept weeing on the man's clothes?  So, then we had a long period of attempting to control the cystitis and finally we achieved our aim.  In the time this took Pete was developing into the most incredible cat.  Loved cuddles, enjoyed being groomed, liked the interaction with the Fosterers' cats who teased him!!  He was a joy and we all loved him, but realised he needed a happy ever after home and we were so fortunate to find that family.

So Pete is now Kasper.  He lives with 4 elderly cats who have accepted him even tho' he has taken over one of their large cat beds.  His greatest coup, however, is his friendship with Micky the Dog.  Micky initially thought he was boss and wanted to bark and play!  Wrong Kasper ambushes him and has taken over Micky's large comfortable chair.  In picture one there is a very smug cat and a bewildered dog.  In picture two having an afternoon snooze in his lovely "borrowed cat bed". He is now enjoying sunbathing, wandering around a real garden with grass to eat.  Finally, he has now discovered a real treat marmite toast, which he shares with his owner and sometimes steals!  So it was worth waiting for that RIGHT OWNER homing cannot be rushed.

Finally…

it is also very important for you to visit the rescue so you can meet all the cats. Despite the fact you may think you know what you want I find 9 times out of 10 the cat or kitten will choose you. Whilst you are visiting, I will be around again to answer any questions or worries you may have.

Even when you have your new cat/kitten I will always be at the end of the 'phone to discuss any problems that may occur.
